Innovative Najdi Mosque Designs Triumph In Diriyah Company Contest
The Diriyah Company recently celebrated a pivotal moment in its quest to enhance the architectural heritage of Diriyah with the Local Mosque Design Competition award ceremony. This event, part of the annual Diriyah Suhoor, took place at Bujairi Terrace, drawing attention from journalists, influencers, and communications professionals across the region. The competition challenged participants to design mosques that embody the traditional Najdi architectural style, utilizing local construction techniques and materials.
The initiative reflects Diriyah's dedication to preserving its rich cultural heritage and promoting community engagement in its developmental journey. Out of 296 entries submitted, 170 met the stringent criteria set by the competition, showcasing a profound appreciation for Najdi architecture. A special panel reviewed the top 11 designs, focusing on their compatibility with the Diriyah master plan, adherence to the design brief, and integration with local culture.

Ultimately, three groups, comprising 12 students in total, emerged victorious. Their mosque designs stood out for their innovative approach to sustainability and cultural respect. The first and second-place designs are slated for construction in Diriyah, promising to significantly transform its architectural landscape. Launched in July 2023, the competition attracted 539 students from 31 universities, including 27 from within Saudi Arabia, one GCC university, and three international institutions.
This initiative not only offered young architects a platform to display their talents but also contributed directly to the local community's architectural evolution. The winning designs are a testament to the vibrant future of Najdi architecture in Diriyah, ensuring that traditional styles continue to inspire modern development.
