UAHR Commends AI's Impact On Digital Human Rights, Cites UAE As Exemplar

The Union Association for Human Rights (UAHR), in a recent statement, has praised the innovative use of artificial intelligence (AI) by several countries to enhance the protection of human rights, with a special mention of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its exemplary model in the region. This acknowledgment was made during the General Debate of Agenda Item 8 at the 55th High-Level Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, marking a significant moment for the UAHR and its collaboration with the Arab-European Forum for Dialogue and Human Rights.

Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Kaabi, President of the UAHR, highlighted the critical role of the Council in safeguarding digital human rights. She stressed the importance of protecting personal data and preventing its illegal use or exploitation, as well as addressing violations stemming from modern technology and AI applications. Dr. Al Kaabi's remarks underscored the necessity for vigilant oversight in this rapidly evolving field.

In her address, Dr. Al Kaabi also commended the UN Human Rights Council's dedication to implementing the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action. She pointed out that despite the significant contributions of the Declaration towards achieving its goals over the past thirty years, there remains a gap between expectations and actual outcomes. A key challenge identified by Dr. Al Kaabi is the Declaration's rigidity and its inability to adapt to the dynamic landscape of human rights issues, which hampers progress in enhancing global human rights protection.

The participation of the UAHR in this high-level session is not just a milestone for the association but also a step forward in bolstering its regional and international presence. Established in January 2024, within the UAE, the UAHR aims to strengthen its partnerships with global entities focused on human rights issues through such active engagements.

This initiative by the UAHR and its emphasis on leveraging AI for human rights protection showcases a forward-thinking approach to addressing contemporary challenges. It also reflects a broader commitment to international solidarity and cooperation in advancing human rights standards worldwide, aligning with global efforts to adapt and respond to new developments in technology and society.
