Digital Diplomacy: The Role Of Digitalisation In Enhancing Economic Relations In The UAE

The Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications Office initiated the "Tech Tuesdays" series with a session titled "Digital Diplomacy: The Role of Digitalisation in Economic Diplomacy." This initiative aims to deepen understanding of digitalisation's impact on economic diplomacy and explore how digital transformation can address global challenges and foster sustainable international economic relations.

During the session, Faisal Eissa Lutfi, Assistant Under-Secretary for Consular Services at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted technological advancements in consular operations. He noted that procedures like replacing lost passports now take just 30 minutes, showcasing the efficiency of digital services. This reflects a significant shift towards swift execution while maintaining high standards of security and trust.

Exploring Digital Diplomacy s Impact on Economy

Saqr Binghalib, Executive Director at the Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications Office, emphasised that digital diplomacy enhances UAE's global soft power. He stated that the UAE ranks highly in international indicators related to diplomatic influence and technology. Binghalib remarked, "This achievement reflects the UAE's proactive vision in adopting technology as a bridge for global communication and enhancing its presence globally."

Farshied Jabarkhyl discussed knowledge sharing's role in shaping the digital future. He highlighted transformations in diplomacy, such as virtual participation by heads of states in forums. Jabarkhyl noted that the UAE's rapid adoption of new technologies is driven by leadership vision and legislative alignment with digital changes to sustain innovation.

Faisal Lutfi also mentioned the smart embassy launched by the UAE in Seoul during Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit to South Korea. This initiative strengthens AI use in providing innovative services, simplifying user experiences. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated consular digitalisation through electronic platforms for efficient service delivery.

Abdulla Al Gaoud from Dubai Chamber highlighted initiatives like "Create Apps in Dubai," launched by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. This initiative aims to develop Emirati coders with advanced skills for coding and app development. Al Gaoud stressed that digital platforms and financial technologies are crucial for trade facilitation and market development.

Impact on Global Knowledge Economy

Al Gaoud also reviewed China's efforts in designing large language models competing with advanced ones like "ChatGPT." He emphasised that innovation acceleration reshapes the future of both the digital economy and global knowledge. The UAE prioritises developing AI due to its significant impact on future economic landscapes.

The session at Fikr Foundation explored how digitalisation affects diplomatic work mechanisms. Speakers discussed how these changes influence economic diplomacy strategies worldwide, highlighting UAE's role as a model for embracing technological advancements swiftly.
