Digital Cooperation Organization's Diplomatic Connect Focuses On Technology For Post-Conflict Resilience

The Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) recently hosted the fifth Diplomatic Connect in Riyadh, gathering diplomats, ambassadors, policymakers, and tech leaders. The event explored how digital tools can aid in rebuilding resilience and fostering peace in post-conflict settings. The theme was "Tech for Rebuilding – Digital Tools for Post-Conflict Resilience," highlighting the urgent need for digital solutions as over 122 million people are displaced by conflicts or crises worldwide.

Organised with the Kuwaiti embassy in Saudi Arabia, the event began with a welcome from Kuwaiti Ambassador Sheikh Sabah Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. DCO Secretary-General Deemah AlYahya followed with an opening speech. Lord Ed Vaizey, a former UK Minister of State for Culture and Digital Economy, delivered the keynote address, emphasising international cooperation in digital advancements.

Diplomatic Connect Highlights Digital Tools for Resilience

Discussions at the event were enriched by real-world examples of successful digital resilience initiatives. Ukraine's Diia platform was highlighted for enabling over 20 million citizens to access more than 100 government services digitally during ongoing conflict. This has ensured essential services continue despite challenging circumstances.

In Jordan, blockchain-powered digital wallets have been instrumental in providing aid to over 300,000 refugees efficiently and transparently. Meanwhile, UNICEF-supported digital classrooms in Syria are helping displaced children reconnect with education. These examples demonstrate how technology can maintain crucial services even amidst turmoil.

Rwanda’s experience was also discussed, showcasing how its digital transformation has rebuilt trust in public services and fostered a thriving tech sector. Rwanda is now recognised as a leading technology hub in Africa due to these efforts. Such initiatives underline the potential of digital tools to restore trust and support community stability.

Kuwaiti Ambassador Sheikh Sabah stated, "Kuwait has always believed that diplomacy and dialogue are the foundation of peace." He expressed pride in hosting Diplomatic Connect as a platform for exploring how digital tools can enhance resilience and support communities towards stability.

Critical Timing for Digital Solutions

DCO Secretary-General Deemah AlYahya highlighted the critical timing of these discussions on technology for reconstruction. She noted that over 122 million people are currently displaced by wars and crises globally. AlYahya remarked that such situations erode institutions and displace families but stressed that digital rebuilding offers a chance to create more just and effective systems.

The event underscored the importance of integrating technology into post-conflict recovery strategies. By leveraging digital tools effectively, communities can rebuild stronger foundations and ensure continuity of essential services even amidst adversity.
