The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) and Dibba Al Hisn Municipality have finalised all preparations for the 12th "Dibba Al Hisn Al Maleh and Fishing Festival." This event, set from 28th to 31st August at Al-Hisn Island, aims to blend traditional marine practices with modern economic growth in Sharjah, celebrating the UAE's cultural heritage.

The festival will feature a variety of interactive activities that honour the UAE's marine history. Attendees can participate in educational workshops on maritime crafts such as Al Maleh (salted fish) creation, salting, and canning. Traditional fishing tools will also be showcased, providing insights into age-old practices.

Dibba Al Hisn Fishing Festival Highlights Heritage

Mohammad Ahmed Amin Al Awadi, Director-General of SCCI, emphasised the festival's role in preserving cultural heritage. He stated that the annual event highlights Sharjah Chamber’s dedication to integrating cultural resources into economic activities. "The Sharjah Chamber’s role is not confined to trade or commerce but also encompasses safeguarding national identity and reviving traditional industries," he said.

Talib Abdullah Al Yahyai, Director of Dibba Al Hisn City Municipality, highlighted efforts to ensure a memorable visitor experience. The festival aims to foster community engagement by encouraging interaction between exhibitors and visitors. It also serves as a platform for parents and grandparents to share maritime knowledge with younger generations.

This year’s festival includes a special area for productive families to display their handmade goods and traditional items. This initiative supports small businesses and encourages entrepreneurship within the local community. The layout features zones like the central "Al Maleh Market," exhibition spaces for local produce, and dining areas offering traditional cuisine.

The event will also host panel discussions on marine resource sustainability and public awareness of traditional fishing methods. Live folkloric performances will further highlight Sharjah’s maritime culture, adding vibrancy to the festival atmosphere.

Innovation in Fisheries Sector

A pavilion dedicated to advanced fishing boats and engine technologies is part of this year's setup. This inclusion positions the festival as a hub for collaboration and innovation in fisheries and related food industries. It underscores the importance of modernising traditional practices while maintaining cultural integrity.

The festival not only celebrates heritage but also acts as a catalyst for economic development in Sharjah's Eastern Region. By showcasing cultural traditions alongside modern advancements, it ensures these practices are passed down through generations while contributing to the local economy.
