Dubai Implements New Standards To Enhance Mental Health Services And Patient Safety In Dubai
The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has introduced new standards for mental health services, aligning with global practices. This initiative aims to create a comprehensive and sustainable mental health care system in Dubai.
The standards focus on integrating various medical disciplines to enhance collaboration among doctors, psychologists, and nurses, ensuring patients receive comprehensive care that meets the highest professional standards.

Dr. Younis Kazim, Acting CEO of the Health Regulation Sector at DHA, stressed the importance of these standards. He stated they reflect DHA's commitment to providing safe and effective mental health care aligned with Dubai's vision to enhance mental health as a core component of its healthcare system. "These standards are crucial for delivering quality mental health services," he noted.
The new guidelines also incorporate digital health services and teletherapy, following the latest global guidelines in virtual care. This ensures high-quality psychological consultations while maintaining patient confidentiality and accessibility to services. The integration of technology is seen as a vital step in modernising mental health care delivery.
Developed with input from experts and international organisations like the Health Standards Organization/Accreditation Canada, these standards ensure alignment with global best practices while considering local privacy needs. Dr. Kazim highlighted DHA’s efforts to foster innovation in therapeutic services and elevate professional training levels for specialised personnel.
The standards emphasise evidence-based therapeutic protocols based on recommendations from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the American Psychological Association (APA). These protocols ensure effective treatment plans built on the latest research. Clear regulations for licensing and registration procedures are included, ensuring services are provided by qualified personnel.
Additionally, roles and responsibilities are precisely defined to improve service efficiency and quality of care. The aim is to create a safe therapeutic environment catering to different age groups, including children, adolescents, and the elderly.
The new standards also focus on enhancing training and professional development for mental health specialists through advanced programmes and workshops. This ensures specialists keep pace with global developments and achieve continuous improvement in service levels. Dr. Kazim explained that these efforts provide a supportive environment for mental health care providers.
DHA's commitment extends to fostering innovation in therapeutic services while ensuring advanced mental health services align with best global practices. The comprehensive approach aims to support both patients and healthcare professionals in achieving optimal outcomes within Dubai's healthcare framework.
