DFSA's Inaugural Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox Draws Interest From 96 Innovative Firms

The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) has revealed that 96 firms are interested in its first Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox. This initiative is part of the DFSA's strategy to support financial innovation within the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). It highlights the growing importance of tokenisation in financial services.

The sandbox is a component of the DFSA’s Innovation Testing Licence programme. It aims to encourage innovation while ensuring market integrity and investor protection. Interest came from various sectors, exploring tokenisation for shares, bonds, including sukuk, and fund units. This reflects tokenisation's potential across the financial ecosystem.

DFSA's Tokenisation Sandbox Attracts 96 Firms

The initiative attracted both established institutions and start-ups keen on digital asset solutions in a regulated setting. This interest underscores DIFC’s appeal as a global centre for digital finance and innovation. The sandbox allows firms to test tokenised solutions safely without facing full regulatory requirements.

Justin Baldacchino, Managing Director, Supervision at DFSA, stated, "We are excited to see such strong interest in the DFSA’s Tokenisation Regulatory Sandbox and to talk about it at the Dubai FinTech Summit." He noted this aligns with Dubai's goal to be among the top four global financial hubs by 2033.

The DFSA’s sandbox approach allows targeted supervision and regulatory dialogue. It helps develop policies for emerging technologies while promoting responsible market innovation. This supports Dubai and the UAE’s ambition to be a global hub for digital assets and next-gen financial services.

After expressing interest, selected firms will apply for an Innovation Testing Licence. They will enter a live testing phase under DFSA oversight, refining offerings while addressing investor protection and transparency. Successful completion may lead to a full licence or withdrawal of their testing licence.

This initiative marks a significant step in engaging with innovative financial technologies. It enables firms to test solutions transparently within a well-regulated environment. The sandbox is crucial in positioning Dubai as a leader in global finance by fostering responsible innovation.
