DEWA's Green Charger Initiative Powers Electric Vehicles In Dubai With Over 39,159 MWh Of Electricity
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reported a 23.6% rise in electric vehicle (EV) charging usage by the end of the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. Since its launch in 2015, DEWA's Green Charger initiative has provided over 39,159 MWh of electricity for EVs, enabling them to travel a combined distance of 195 million kilometres across Dubai.
"We support the transition towards green mobility and net zero by reducing the carbon footprint in the transport sector, enhancing the competitiveness of the UAE and Dubai in the electric vehicle sector, in line with the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

The number of electric vehicles in Dubai has grown significantly since 2015. By the end of Q1 2025, there were over 39,000 EVs registered, marking a 5.41% increase from Q1 2024. This growth supports Dubai's shift towards sustainable transport solutions. The EV Green Charger initiative saw its registered users grow from just 14 in 2015 to 20,903 by Q1 2025.
DEWA’s infrastructure now includes more than 1,100 charging points throughout its network and those operated by licensed charge point operators (CPOs). This expansion is part of efforts to support increased EV adoption and provide convenient charging options for users.
Electric vehicle demand is rising in the UAE. A survey by Toluna revealed that 73% of UAE residents prefer purchasing EVs. DEWA offers four types of chargers: ultra-fast, fast, public, and wall-box. These chargers are accessible at various strategic locations around Dubai.
Customers can locate these stations using DEWA’s website, smart app or through other digital platforms. The convenience offered by these tools ensures that users can easily find charging points whenever needed.
User Registration and Access
DEWA facilitates easy account creation for EV owners through its website, smart app or interactive voice response (IVR) system at its Customer Care Centre. Once an EV is registered with Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), DEWA sets up an EV Green Charger account for access to charging stations where vehicles can be charged within an hour.
For those who have not registered their vehicles with DEWA, there is a guest mode feature available on EV Green Chargers allowing them to charge their vehicles without needing an account.
The increasing use of electric vehicles aligns with Dubai's goals for greener transportation solutions. As infrastructure continues to expand and more people opt for electric cars, this trend is expected to continue supporting environmental sustainability efforts across the region.
