Dewa Smart Solution To Boost 11kV Electricity Network Efficiency And Project Delivery

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has introduced a smart solution that redesigns how 11kV electricity distribution networks are planned, cutting design time and costs while improving accuracy. The system is already in use within the power and water planning division and is intended to support Dubai’s reliability, grid resilience and long-term sustainability goals across its fast-growing urban and economic landscape.

The new digital approach uses specialised software to draw together technical information from several existing DEWA systems, then turn that information into clear design-ready formats. By doing so, planning teams can prepare network layouts more quickly, support continuous electricity supply and maintain high engineering standards that match Dubai’s wider infrastructure objectives in the Middle East.

DEWA smart solution boosts 11kV network

The smart solution centres on advanced software that builds two linked databases and connects them to network design tools. These tools allow end users to prepare 11kV network plans more efficiently. Data is collected from peak load sheets, the SAP system and master single-line diagrams, then processed into one consistent structure that supports precise and readable distribution network designs.

The implementation has already produced measurable outcomes, including lower planning and engineering costs and faster design cycles. Network layouts have become more streamlined and efficient, which improves overall grid performance. This has strengthened service continuity, helping DEWA maintain reliable electricity supplies for customers while following international best practice in system planning and asset management.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, linked the project to Dubai’s wider digital agenda. "In line with the vision of the wise leadership to strengthen the integration of advanced technologies across key sectors to boost productivity and improve service efficiency, we have developed this smart solution, which reflects DEWA’s approach to embedding digital innovation as a core pillar in the development of planning and operations in the energy sector. By transforming multiple data sources into practical tools, the solution supports decision-making and improves performance efficiency. Designing electricity distribution networks using advanced software solutions reduces the time required to prepare plans, lowers costs and enhances design accuracy and flexibility. This, in turn, strengthens the readiness of the electricity network to keep pace with rapid urban and economic growth. These efforts support DEWA’s vision to build smart and sustainable infrastructure that contributes to Dubai’s long-term strategic goals in sustainability, innovation and operational excellence," said Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.

Al Tayer’s comments link the software directly to operational planning and daily workflows. The system is designed to turn large volumes of technical and business data into usable tools for planners. This approach helps DEWA align its network development with Dubai’s growth rates, while managing investment, reliability and sustainability targets important across the UAE energy sector.

Abdulla Al Aghbari, Acting Executive Vice President of Power and Water Planning at DEWA, highlighted the impact on teams using the system. Abdulla Al Aghbari said, "This advanced software solution provides an effective tool for planning teams by integrating data from multiple sources into a single platform. It accelerates and improves design processes, and supports more efficient planning decisions. This innovation reflects the division’s commitment to adopting smart solutions that enhance the resilience of the electricity grid and support Dubai’s future growth requirements."

This project forms part of DEWA’s wider effort to invest in organisational innovation and in-house digital tools. By developing the electricity distribution network smart solution internally, DEWA aims to strengthen its role in the energy sector and support a smart, reliable and sustainable distribution network that aligns with Dubai’s future ambitions and long-term strategic planning across the region.
