DEWA Plants 4,500 Mangrove Trees To Enhance Biodiversity At Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), took part in a mangrove planting initiative at Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary. DEWA organised this event with the Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG) to plant 4,500 mangrove trees. The campaign saw participation from DEWA's senior officials, employees, subsidiaries, and students from DEWA Academy.
Al Tayer highlighted the alignment of this initiative with the UAE's leadership directives and the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for 2030. These goals include clean water, climate action, and life on land and below water. He emphasised DEWA's commitment to biodiversity and protecting natural habitats through environmental awareness campaigns. These efforts aim to engage society in preserving resources, planting trees, and improving water quality.

In 2023, DEWA planted over 5,500 mangrove trees at Jebel Ali Marine Sanctuary. This effort involved 1,000 DEWA employees, their families, subsidiary employees, and DEWA Academy students. Participants contributed 2,080 volunteering hours. The campaign achieved a satisfaction rate of 92.9 percent among participants.
Al Tayer praised the growing involvement in DEWA’s initiatives aimed at fostering individual and organisational contributions towards sustainability. He commended the participants' volunteering spirit and dedication to environmental protection. Their efforts reflect a strong commitment to safeguarding natural habitats.
DEWA has also removed 3,100 kilograms of waste from the sanctuary shores. Additionally, eight tonnes of algae and seaweed were collected for scientific research on marine environments. This work supports studies that enhance understanding of marine ecosystems.
The national initiative to plant 100 million mangrove trees by 2030 is a significant focus for DEWA. Mangrove forests are crucial nature-based solutions for combating climate change and protecting coastal ecosystems. Al Tayer reiterated support for these efforts to ensure sustainability.
DEWA’s campaigns aim to make a positive impact by encouraging community participation in environmental conservation. The organisation continues to launch initiatives that promote sustainable practices and protect natural resources across the UAE.
The ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability reflects a broader vision for ecological preservation in the region. Through these efforts, DEWA contributes significantly to national goals while fostering community engagement in conservation activities.
