DEWA Unveils 43.61% Boost In Water And Electricity Efficiency, Saving 104 Million Tonnes Of Carbon Emissions

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has reported a significant enhancement in the efficiency of water and electricity generation over the years. By 2024, DEWA's efficiency improvements have led to a 43.61% increase in productivity since 2006. This has resulted in the avoidance of 104 million tonnes of carbon emissions, which is akin to the carbon sequestration potential of planting 527 million trees.

DEWA's adoption of co-generation technology has been pivotal in achieving these efficiency gains. This technology utilises the waste heat from gas turbines to produce additional electricity and supply thermal energy for water desalination processes, showcasing DEWA's commitment to innovative and sustainable energy production methods.

DEWA Boosts Efficiency and Reduces Emissions

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, the MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted the organization's dedication to enhancing the efficiency of electricity and water production as a cornerstone of its operational strategy. This focus has not only led to significant environmental benefits but has also resulted in considerable financial savings for the authority.

Nasser Lootah, Executive Vice President of Generation (Power & Water) at DEWA, said, "We place great emphasis on enhancing the efficiency of electricity and water production through innovation and continuous upgrades to our production plants, as well as the deployment of cutting-edge technologies across all our facilities and projects. DEWA regularly develops operation and maintenance modes to enhance efficiency further," he stated.

Moreover, DEWA has introduced an innovative hybrid system in its water desalination plants. This system combines multi-stage flashing with seawater reverse osmosis technology, ensuring that plants operate at peak efficiency throughout their lifecycle while keeping costs to a minimum. This approach is indicative of DEWA's comprehensive strategy to integrate various technological solutions to enhance productivity and sustainability in its operations.

Through innovative technology and strategic operational enhancements, DEWA has set a benchmark for sustainable energy production, contributing significantly to the reduction of carbon emissions and the promotion of environmental sustainability.
