DEWA's Hydroelectric Power Plant In Hatta Reaches 94.15% Completion Ahead Of Trial Operations

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has revealed significant progress on its hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, with 94.15% of the project now complete. The installation of generators is currently in progress, aiming for a trial run in early 2025. The upper dam's filling, featuring a main wall of 72 metres and a side dam of 37 metres, has been finalised as part of the preparations.

The hydroelectric facility serves as an energy storage system with an efficiency rate of 78.9%. It utilises water stored in the upper dam to generate kinetic energy through a 1.2-kilometre underground tunnel. This kinetic energy powers turbines, transforming mechanical energy into electricity, which can be supplied to DEWA’s grid within just 90 seconds to meet demand.

Hatta Hydroelectric Plant by DEWA Nears Completion

To replenish energy, clean electricity from the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park will pump water back to the upper dam. This process converts electrical power into kinetic energy. The plant boasts a production capacity of 250 megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of 1,500 megawatt-hours, with an expected lifespan of up to 80 years.

This initiative marks the first of its kind in the Arabian Gulf region, backed by an investment of AED1.421 billion. Completion is anticipated by mid-2025. The project aligns with a broader vision for Hatta's development, focusing on sustainable growth and creating innovative job opportunities for Emiratis.

The project supports Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy and Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. DEWA aims to diversify energy production using renewable sources like solar photovoltaic panels and concentrated solar power. Additionally, renewable energy will be utilised to produce green hydrogen.

Through this initiative, DEWA intends to enhance Dubai's energy mix by incorporating various clean technologies. This includes leveraging solar power and other renewable methods to ensure sustainable energy solutions for the future.

This ambitious project not only contributes to environmental goals but also fosters economic growth by providing new employment opportunities in the region.
