DEWA's Green Hydrogen Project Achieves Significant CO2 Emission Reductions In Dubai's Transport Sector
The Green Hydrogen initiative by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is enhancing sustainable mobility in Dubai. Since its inception in May 2021, this project has generated about 90 tonnes of green hydrogen. Most of this hydrogen has been used to create green energy, supporting efficient resource use in transportation.
More than 2.5 tonnes of hydrogen have been delivered to ENOC Group’s Service Station of the Future at Expo City Dubai. This amount can power 500 cars, cutting over 40 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The station can refuel around 50 fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in about eight minutes each, making it unique in the region for offering green hydrogen alongside traditional fuels and EV charging.

DEWA's Green Hydrogen project is the first in the Middle East and North Africa to use solar energy for hydrogen production. It is designed for future applications across various sectors like air, land, and sea transport. The project aligns with Dubai's strategic goals for sustainability and air quality improvement by promoting sustainable transport options such as electric and hybrid vehicles.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated, "Hydrogen is the fuel of the future and a promising alternative to traditional energy sources. It is significant as Dubai – and the wider UAE – continues to lay the foundation for a green economy." This project supports both the National Hydrogen Strategy and UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy.
The collaboration between DEWA, Expo 2020 Dubai, and Siemens Energy has resulted in a plant capable of producing approximately 20 kilogrammes of hydrogen per hour. Its storage tank can hold up to 12 hours' worth of solar-generated hydrogen. The facility uses this hydrogen through a gas motor with a power capacity near 300 kilowatts.
The Green Hydrogen project also backs the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030, which aims to foster sustainable transport solutions. By reducing carbon emissions from transportation, it helps position Dubai as a leader in green economy initiatives globally.
This initiative not only supports local strategies but also contributes significantly to global efforts towards sustainability. By integrating advanced technologies with strategic partnerships, DEWA is paving the way for innovative energy solutions that align with environmental goals.
