DEWA Plans Major Expansion Of Green EV Charging Stations In Dubai For 2024

Majid Hilal Al Hazami, Director of Smart Grid Projects Management at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has announced plans to significantly expand the network of green fast and ultra-fast charging stations for Electric Vehicles (EVs) across Dubai. Currently, the emirate boasts approximately 390 charging stations of various types. This announcement was made during DEWA's participation in the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) in Abu Dhabi, as reported to the Emirates News Agency (WAM).

Al Hazami outlined DEWA's ambitious goal to increase the number of EV charging stations to 1,000 by the end of 2025. This expansion will not only enhance the infrastructure but also increase the proportion of ultra-fast chargers available in Dubai. He highlighted the differences between green chargers, noting that fast and ultra-fast chargers are strategically located at petrol stations and major entry and exit points of the emirate, while medium-speed chargers are typically found in shopping malls, parks, and office areas.

The charging time for EVs varies with the type of charger used; ultra-fast chargers can power up to 80 percent of a vehicle's battery within 20 to 40 minutes, whereas medium-speed chargers take between 2 to 4 hours for the same amount of charge. The initiative for green chargers was first announced in 2014, with the initial phase completed in 2015, installing 100 stations. Since then, DEWA has continuously expanded its network of green chargers.

Al Hazami also discussed the role of smart grid management in achieving sustainability goals and enhancing customer service. He emphasized the significance of DEWA's participation in the WFES, highlighting its support for clean energy trends on a local, regional, and global scale. One of DEWA's key projects showcased at the summit was the Mohammed bin Rashid Solar Energy Project, noted as the largest single-site solar energy project worldwide.

The project utilizes various technologies to generate energy efficiently and effectively, including the world's tallest solar power tower, standing over 263 meters high. Al Hazami commended the efforts of the Innovation Center in supporting clean energy projects and future technologies, particularly its role in aiding educational institutions and other entities in understanding clean energy advancements.

This expansion and innovation in green charging infrastructure underscore Dubai's commitment to sustainable energy solutions and its position as a leader in clean energy technology. With these initiatives, DEWA continues to support Dubai's vision for a greener future.
