DEWA Expands Electricity Distribution Network With 1,530 New Substations To Meet Rising Demand
Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has made significant strides in expanding its energy infrastructure. In 2024, DEWA commissioned 1,530 new 11 kV distribution substations across Dubai, reflecting an 8.2% increase from the previous year. This expansion required 1,070,670 man-hours of work, all completed with strict adherence to health and safety standards.
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, highlighted that by the end of 2024, there were 45,317 medium voltage substations in operation. This growth aligns with Dubai's economic and urban development needs. The increase in substations is a testament to DEWA's commitment to meeting the rising electricity demand driven by the city's growth.

Al Tayer stated that DEWA is dedicated to making Dubai a model for advanced integrated infrastructure. This commitment supports the Dubai Economic Agenda D33 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. DEWA continues to enhance its transmission and distribution networks based on electricity demand forecasts up to 2030.
DEWA's adoption of cutting-edge technologies in energy production, transmission, and distribution has positioned it as a global leader in more than ten key performance indicators (KPIs). Al Tayer noted that line losses from electricity transmission and distribution networks have been reduced to 2.2%, compared to approximately 6% to 7% in Europe and the US.
This achievement underscores DEWA's role as a global model for energy efficiency and reliability. The authority remains committed to keeping pace with increased demand while maintaining high standards of service delivery.
Collaboration and Customer Satisfaction
Rashid Bin Humaidan, Executive Vice President of Distribution Power at DEWA, emphasized the use of modern technology and collaboration with international companies. These efforts ensure energy supplies meet high standards of availability, reliability, and sustainability while automating the distribution network.
DEWA implements optimal maintenance plans to reduce average power outages. This approach manages growing electricity demand effectively while ensuring continuous supply stability for all customers. It also enhances stakeholder satisfaction across various sectors.
DEWA's strategic initiatives reflect its dedication to supporting Dubai's development goals through reliable energy solutions. The authority continues to set benchmarks in efficiency and innovation within the global energy sector.
