DEWA Celebrates Innovators In 2nd Cleantech Hackathon, Advancing Clean Energy Goals

The second cycle of the Cleantech Hackathon, hosted by the Innovation Centre of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has successfully concluded, marking a significant stride towards sustainable innovation in energy and digital transformation. This event drew over 160 participants from 25 nationalities and 20 universities across the globe, all competing to develop solutions that integrate clean energy sources effectively.

At the heart of this competition was the commitment to support the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. These ambitious plans aim for Dubai to produce 100% of its power capacity from clean energy sources by the year 2050. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA, emphasized the importance of involving youth in sustainable development and innovation to combat climate change effects. This initiative not only supports the UAE's vision but also cements Dubai's status as a global hub for innovation and a nurturing ground for future innovators.

Waleed Bin Salman, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Excellence at DEWA, highlighted the role of the Innovation Centre in promoting sustainability awareness, enhancing national capabilities, and boosting business competitiveness in the clean energy sector. The competition was organized around three main tracks: optimizing clean energy sources' efficiency and cost-effectiveness, ensuring renewable energy's reliability and stability, and integrating renewable energy into existing systems seamlessly.

The event's focus on these tracks aimed at addressing key challenges such as maximizing efficiency, overcoming intermittency issues, and finding innovative solutions for energy storage, distribution, and smart grid technologies. The participants were evaluated based on their projects' innovation and impact, with three winning teams awarded monetary prizes at the event's conclusion.

This initiative by DEWA through its Innovation Centre is a testament to Dubai's commitment to fostering a culture of innovation among the youth. By encouraging young minds to explore sustainable solutions, DEWA is not only contributing to the global fight against climate change but also preparing a skilled workforce ready to lead the transition towards a greener future.
