DEWA Awards Dubai Water Protection Contract To Reinforce GRE Pipelines

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has awarded a contract worth more than AED100.8 million. The tender covers supply, installation, testing and commissioning of glass-reinforced epoxy (GRE) water pipelines. These pipelines will protect and divert existing utility services at several sites across Dubai. The move supports ongoing upgrades to the emirate’s water transmission and distribution systems.

The project will be implemented at 20 priority locations across Dubai over a 24‑month schedule. Work is designed to strengthen the current water network while allowing future expansion. DEWA plans to coordinate the activities with other infrastructure projects. This aims to limit disruption for residents, businesses and key economic sectors while work continues.

The scope of work includes detailed surveying, excavation and civil engineering tasks before pipeline installation. Contractors will then complete reinstatement of affected areas and restore surfaces and services. Crews will connect the new GRE sections to the existing water network using planned interfaces. Integration works will support continuous water flows while older assets are protected or diverted.

GRE water pipelines were selected due to their strength and resistance to corrosion in underground conditions. The material is designed to handle high pressures and variable soil environments. Its durability supports a longer operating life for water transmission assets. Using GRE should reduce maintenance needs and protect Dubai utility infrastructure over the project horizon.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, stated, "This award aligns with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, to build world-class infrastructure that meets the growing needs of Dubai’s ambitious development plans. Investing in such protective measures is essential for the resilience of our networks and ensures we continue to provide a reliable, efficient and sustainable supply of electricity and water to all sectors of the emirate."

DEWA links the GRE water pipelines project with wider reliability and safety goals for Dubai utility infrastructure. By shielding existing services, the authority can accommodate new roads, buildings and other schemes. This approach supports service continuity for customers while upgrades proceed. It also aligns with Dubai’s plans for sustainable urban growth and efficient resource management.

The initiative highlights DEWA’s focus on operational efficiency across its water transmission and distribution networks. Careful planning of diversions and protection works aims to avoid unplanned outages. The project is also expected to standardise materials and methods for similar works. This should benefit future network projects across the emirate’s growing communities.
