DEWA And Austria Collaborate On Sustainable Development And Green Energy Transition Initiatives
Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), recently met with Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Austria's Federal Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, and Etienne Berchtold, the Austrian Ambassador to the UAE. The meeting aimed to strengthen ties in sustainability and renewable energy, aligning with the UAE's green economy goals.
Al Tayer emphasised DEWA’s commitment to global leadership in clean energy. He highlighted Dubai's strategic objectives under the UAE Net Zero Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050. These plans aim for 100% clean energy by 2050. DEWA plays a crucial role through projects like the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park.

The discussions also explored ways to enhance cooperation in green energy transition and climate action. Both parties stressed the importance of technology and knowledge exchange to develop innovative solutions for environmental challenges. This collaboration is vital for addressing global climate issues effectively.
Al Tayer shared insights into DEWA’s achievements in reducing transmission losses. In 2024, DEWA recorded the lowest electricity network losses globally at 2%, compared to a global average of 6-7%. Water transmission losses were also minimal at 4.5%. These figures highlight DEWA’s efficiency in resource management.
DEWA is integrating Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies to bolster its operations. By incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) across services, DEWA aims to enhance quality, efficiency, reliability, and sustainability in energy and water sectors. This approach supports Dubai's leadership in AI adoption globally.
Al Tayer also introduced "Al Shera’a", DEWA’s new headquarters set to be an architectural icon. It will be the tallest and smartest energy-positive government building worldwide. Designed for platinum LEED rating and gold WELL Building Standard, it uses IoT, Big Data analytics, AI, and renewable energy solutions for maximum efficiency.
Strategic Partnerships
Hattmannsdorfer expressed gratitude for the productive dialogue with Al Tayer. He acknowledged the significant potential for future collaboration between Austria and the UAE in renewable energy projects. Both nations are leaders in this field, making joint initiatives beneficial.
He further highlighted the UAE's strategic importance as a partner for Austria, especially within the energy sector. Concrete cooperation plans are set to be implemented soon, reflecting both countries' commitment to advancing renewable energy efforts together.
The meeting underscored DEWA's role in achieving Dubai's clean energy goals through flagship projects like the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. This solar park aims for a production capacity of 7,260 megawatts by 2030 using photovoltaic and concentrated solar power technologies.
This initiative will significantly reduce carbon emissions by approximately eight million tonnes annually. Such efforts align with Dubai's vision of becoming a leader in sustainable development while contributing positively to global environmental goals.
