Design Space AlUla Celebrates Global Design Talent At Milan Design Week
At the prestigious Milan Design Week, running from April 16 to 21 this year, Design Space AlUla has taken center stage, showcasing an array of modern designs that spotlight both local and international talent. This exhibition is a testament to the burgeoning creative industries within the region, featuring projects from Madrasat Addeera, the first Arts and Design Center in AlUla, among others.
Participants from across the globe have contributed to this diverse collection, including notable works such as "Gharameel" by Saudi artist Dr. Zahrah Alghamdi, inspired by AlUla's unique rock formations. Argentine artist Cristian Mohaded's "AlWaha" echoes the desert dunes and palm oases, while the Spanish duo TAKK presents "Duna", a versatile seating area inspired by the AlUla desert. TECHNOCrafts introduces "Alwadiya: The Living Pots", a design that emulates the natural cycles of AlUla's oasis.

Further enriching the exhibition are pieces from the AlUla Design Residency program. Leo Orta's "Peculiar Erosions" draws on AlUla's mud-brick architecture and geology; "From Debris" by Raw Materials reinterprets local historical instruments; Architect Leen Ajlan's "Takki" offers a modern twist on traditional recreational spaces; Hall Haus's "Haus Dari" reimagines traditional cushions and diwans; and a flexible steel divider named "Surface" by a Bahraini-Danish architecture firm facilitates various interactions.
Nora Aldabal, Executive Director of Arts and Creative Industries at the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), emphasized the importance of these design initiatives. She stated, "Our growing design initiatives reflect the ongoing development of AlUla as a hub for traditional design, arts, and innovation. These initiatives celebrate the region's cultural heritage, local materials, and natural history." She further noted that the exhibited works represent the evolving aesthetics of design in AlUla, capturing inspiration and fostering continuous dialogue across diverse cultures and artistic disciplines.
Launched in February 2024 as part of the AlUla Arts Festival, Design Space AlUla underscores the region's status as a cultural, creative, and storytelling hub. This permanent exhibition invites the global creative community to delve into AlUla's latest design initiatives, offering insights into inspiration, design processes, and final outcomes.
