Desert Theatre Festival Launch In Sharjah Celebrated By His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi
His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the 8th Desert Theatre Festival on Friday. The event is being held in the Al Khohaif area of Sharjah and will continue until December 17th. H.H. Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, was also present at the opening.
Upon arrival, His Highness was greeted by Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qasimi, Head of the Ruler's Office, alongside other dignitaries including Sheikh Mohammed bin Humaid Al Qasimi and Sheikh Majid bin Sultan Al Qasimi. Several senior officials and artists were also in attendance to welcome him.
The festival site serves as an open-air theatre celebrating Arabian desert culture through theatrical art. His Highness witnessed his own play, "The Robe Dyed in Blood," which portrays a segment of Arab poet Bashir bin 'Awana's life. This work highlights themes of courage, pride, and eloquence.
The play showcases the bravery and dedication of Arabs through poetry, which has preserved tales of heroism and life in both urban and desert settings. The story revolves around Bashir's quest to marry his cousin Fatima bint Amr, reflecting his chivalry and determination.
The performance was brought to life by the Sharjah National Theatre Group under the direction of Mohammed Al Ameri. It featured local and Arab actors along with numerous performers, illusionists, lighting experts, and sound technicians. The show included storytelling, poetry recitation, horse displays, and various forms of Arab art.
The festival continues with a diverse lineup of plays from different countries. On the second day, Tunisia will present "Palace of Dust" by Fann Ad-Dafateen. Jordan will showcase "Al-Deera" by Raff Performance Arts Group on the third day. Egypt's Studio 77 will perform "Al-Zeina" on the fourth day.
The final day will feature Mauritania's "Al-Hakeem" by Eihaa Performing Arts Group. Each play will be followed by a critical discussion analyzing its content and style. These discussions aim to deepen understanding of each performance's artistic perspectives.
An intellectual programme accompanies the festival on December 14th and 15th. This year's theme is "Desert Theatre: Experience and Awareness." It focuses on how the festival influences Arab theatre from both practical and theoretical angles.
This edition aims to highlight the impact of desert theatre on Arab culture through engaging performances and insightful discussions that explore its significance in modern times.
