Department Of Municipalities And Transport Achieves AED 4 Billion In Key Projects For Abu Dhabi In 2024

The Department of Municipalities and Transport – Abu Dhabi (DMT) has highlighted its achievements for 2024, reflecting significant progress in various sectors across Abu Dhabi. The department completed projects worth AED4 billion, part of a larger initiative with a budget exceeding AED75 billion. This effort underscores DMT's role in fostering growth and safety, contributing to Abu Dhabi's recognition as the most liveable city in the MENA region by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

Abu Dhabi's infrastructure saw notable enhancements with DMT investing AED3.4 billion in mobility projects. These included expanding the Helio-Abu Al Abiyad Road in Al Dhafra Region and completing a double-bridge project valued at AED315 million. These developments reduced peak-hour delays on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street by up to 80%, showcasing DMT's commitment to improving transportation efficiency.

In addition to road improvements, DMT focused on community-centric projects through Al Tawajud Al Baladi centres. These centres operate over 20 facilities across the emirate, serving as hubs for engaging with residents and enhancing public services. The opening of more than 200 parks and beaches further highlights DMT's dedication to creating inclusive spaces for all residents.

The Abu Dhabi Real Estate Centre (ADREC), affiliated with DMT, reported substantial growth with 28,249 transactions, marking a 24.2% increase from the previous year. This included sales worth AED58.5 billion and mortgage transactions totalling AED37.7 billion, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a prime investment destination.

DMT supported advancements in mobility solutions through initiatives like Abu Dhabi Mobility Week, which showcased industry innovations and facilitated collaboration among stakeholders. A milestone was achieved with passenger-carrying drone trials, featuring test flights of drones capable of carrying passengers over significant distances, marking progress in urban air mobility.

Public transportation investments yielded positive outcomes with over 90 million bus rides recorded, along with significant usage of water transport networks. More than 28 million air passengers were also noted, highlighting improved infrastructure and connectivity within the emirate.

Technological Integration

DMT embraced AI applications to enhance operations and community life. A centralised data-driven platform allows city planners to optimise liveability standards based on resident needs using AI Digital Twin capabilities. This system is becoming essential for smart technology application in urban management.

Further AI integration was seen through an architectural review platform that accelerates construction approvals using generative AI and 3D model analysis. The Integrated Transport Centre incorporated an AI engine providing insights into commuter behaviour, aiding decision-making for large-scale mobility operations.

Global Partnerships and Future Plans

DMT strengthened global partnerships by signing agreements with cities like Shenzhen and Seoul, enhancing ties between capitals. Collaborations with institutions like MIT led to establishing the DMT Future Hub for urban mobility excellence. Additionally, hosting the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organisation’s MENA office reinforced Abu Dhabi’s leadership in sustainable city advancements.

DMT plans to announce strategic projects soon to bolster Abu Dhabi's reputation as a leading smart city globally while maintaining its status as one of the most liveable cities in the MENA region. These initiatives align with DMT’s commitment to sustainable development and enhancing liveability standards across the emirate.
