Department Of Health Abu Dhabi Highlights Sickle Cell Awareness Initiatives For World Sickle Cell Day
World Sickle Cell Day, observed on 19th June each year, serves as a crucial platform to enhance awareness about sickle cell disease. Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, highlighted its importance in supporting patients and their families while addressing the disease's health and social implications.
Dr. Al Mannaei emphasised that sickle cell disease is a major global public health issue. It significantly affects patients' quality of life and imposes long-term challenges on families. The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi is dedicated to transforming this situation through innovative approaches, early detection, and personalised care.

Utilising advanced Artificial Intelligence tools powered by data and genomic sciences, the department aims to create a predictive and preventive system. Prevention efforts start with the Premarital Genetic Screening Programme, enabling couples to make informed choices to reduce genetic conditions like sickle cell in future generations.
The department also focuses on prediction by transitioning from reactive to proactive care for sickle cell disease. Platforms such as the Emirati Genome Programme are instrumental in this shift. Integrating sickle cell into the Newborn Genetic Screening Programme ensures early detection and timely intervention for better family outcomes across the Emirate.
Dr. Al Mannaei praised the introduction of innovative treatments for sickle cell disease. In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, CASGEVY, a CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-editing therapy, has been introduced for patients with sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassaemia. "This marks the first time this cutting-edge treatment is available in the UAE," she said.
Beyond treatment advancements, investment in scientific research remains crucial. The Department partners with the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an through the Research and Innovation Fund to support research addressing key healthcare priorities. One grant recipient received funding for research on anaemia and sickle cell disease's impact on healthspan.
The commitment to fostering a healthy population involves delivering top-tier care while promoting resilience and innovation continuously. By integrating these strategies, the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi aims to reshape realities for those affected by sickle cell disease.
