RTA Launches Deira Old Souq Marine Station, Boosting Dubai's Transport Network
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has recently inaugurated the Deira Old Souq Marine Transport Station, enhancing the city's marine transport infrastructure. This new addition aims to serve areas such as the Old Baladiya Road Area and Gold Souq, while also connecting Al Fahidi and Bur Dubai Stations. The initiative is a key component of RTA's comprehensive strategy to elevate marine transport services and facilities, aligning with Dubai's expansive growth across various sectors, especially in boosting the city's tourism appeal.
Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency at RTA, highlighted the station's enhancements, which mirror those made at the Bur Dubai model station. Efforts were concentrated on maintaining the cultural essence, improving user amenities, enlarging sheltered waiting zones, and introducing retail spaces for abra riders. These enhancements have led to a notable 27 percent increase in revenue, partly due to a 15 percent rise in station capacity. Furthermore, the station has achieved a silver category Green Building Certification, reflecting RTA's commitment to sustainability through upgraded lighting and marina facilities utilizing eco-friendly materials.

The Deira Old Souq Marine Transport Station is a significant milestone within RTA's 2020-2023 master plan for marine transport development. Marine transport is an essential component of Dubai's transit system, catering to over 17 million passengers annually. With ongoing efforts to enhance two of the four traditional abra stations along Dubai Creek in its second phase, RTA aims to enrich abra riders' experience while prioritizing security and safety at marine transport stations.
Since the inauguration of the Dubai Water Canal, connecting Dubai Creek with the Arabian Gulf, there has been a steady increase in marine transport usage. This growth is expected to continue with further developments along the canal's shores and the construction of additional marine stations. The overarching goal is to establish marine transport as a preferred mode of mobility for citizens, residents, and tourists alike, offering them a unique vantage point of Dubai's scenic urban and tourist landmarks.
