The Urban Treasures Initiative was created to acknowledge homegrown businesses like restaurants, bakeries, tailors, fabric stores, perfumeries, jewellers, pharmacies, photography studios, and similar establishments that have thrived in Abu Dhabi for over 20 years. This award aligns with DCT Abu Dhabi’s Modern Heritage Initiative which aims to celebrate and protect the emirate’s recent past.
Nominations for Urban Treasures 2025 are now open to the public. This reflects DCT Abu Dhabi's commitment to involving community members in recognising authentic institutions serving the community for decades. A specialised committee evaluates nominations based on criteria such as placemaking, urban history, community value, physical authenticity among other factors highlighting these establishments' significance within Abu Dhabi.
The Urban Treasures Initiative not only celebrates long-standing businesses but also inspires future generations to appreciate their legacy. By recognising these establishments' contributions over time, DCT Abu Dhabi ensures they remain integral parts of the city's identity while preserving its rich history.
