DCO Unveils Digital Economy Trends 2025 Report At IGF 2024 To Guide Stakeholders

The Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) took part in the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2024, which was hosted at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh from December 15 to 19. The forum, organised by the United Nations under the theme ‘Building Our Multistakeholder Digital Future,’ provided a platform for discussions on various aspects of the digital economy, including ethical AI and e-waste management.

During the event, DCO launched its 'Digital Economy Trends 2025' report. This report offers a comprehensive analysis of the digital economy's evolution and its impact on industries and societies. It aims to provide stakeholders with vital data and strategic insights to navigate technological advancements effectively. The report highlights three main themes: Sustainable Intelligent Ecosystems, Empowered Communities, and Trust and Security.

DCO Launches Digital Economy Trends Report at IGF

The report identifies key trends expected to shape the future by 2025. These include extending global connectivity, deploying specialised AI, and building digital skills. Emerging trends such as ensuring a digitally safe world and governing superintelligent AI are also highlighted. Alaa Abdulaal, DCO's Chief of Digital Economy Foresight, presented these findings at the IGF Village Stage on December 17.

DCO Secretary-General Deemah AlYahya emphasised the significance of the digital economy as a catalyst for global innovation. She stated, "The digital economy is a driving force behind global innovation, reshaping industries, societies, and everyday lives at an unprecedented pace." AlYahya stressed that staying ahead requires actionable insights and robust analysis.

Ministerial Roundtable on Misinformation

At IGF 2024, DCO initiated activities with a Ministerial Roundtable focused on misinformation. Government leaders discussed collaboration to foster a resilient online ecosystem. In her keynote address, AlYahya called for global multi-stakeholder cooperation to enhance digital trust. A panel discussion titled ‘Navigating the Misinformation Maze’ further explored this topic with international experts.

Global Digital Compact Townhall

In line with advancing the Global Digital Compact (GDC), adopted earlier this year at the United Nations General Assembly, DCO co-hosted a "GDC Townhall" alongside the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and the Office of the UN Tech Envoy (OSET). This event aimed to support GDC’s vision for a secure and inclusive digital future.

DCO also organised two Digital Space Accelerator roundtables addressing ethical AI governance and e-waste management. Additionally, they held a panel discussion on creating safe digital spaces for children. Delegates participated in various sessions covering topics like data governance and women in gaming.

Founded in November 2020, DCO is a global multilateral organisation comprising 16 Member States. Together they represent over USD 3.5 trillion in GDP and more than 800 million people, with 70% under age 35. DCO strives to promote digital prosperity by unifying efforts towards digital transformation.

The IGF 2024 took place amidst discussions around GDC’s ambitious roadmap for an inclusive digital future. The DCO supports this initiative as it aligns with their mission to advance common interests in digital transformation globally.

The forum concluded with participants reflecting on shared goals for fostering an open yet secure online environment through collaborative efforts among diverse stakeholders worldwide.
