Dar Al-Rahmaniah Receives King Salman Charter Award For Blending Tradition With Modernity
Abdulrahman Al-Sudairy Cultural Center in Al-Ghat Governorate has been honoured with the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award for its Dar Al-Rahmaniah project. This award, in its inaugural edition, was given to the center for adhering to the charter's standards and values.
Sultan Al-Sudairy, Director General of the Center, emphasised that the charter's core aim is to embed the Kingdom's cultural heritage into buildings. He noted that Dar Al-Rahmaniah’s design reflects local heritage and rural settings, featuring Najdi-style mud buildings, arches, and an open prayer area facing a courtyard. The building is surrounded by palm trees, enhancing its traditional aesthetic.

Al-Sudairy highlighted that one of Dar Al-Rahmaniah’s key features is its use of natural materials sourced from the surrounding environment. Straw and clay blocks were used for walls and ventilation towers, while palm fronds and wood were utilised for ceilings. The flooring was made from Al-Ghat stone, and a tent served as the roof for the lecture hall.
The design of Dar Al-Rahmaniah aims to blend heritage with modernity to create an inspiring environment. This approach strengthens social and cultural ties within the community while preserving the identity and spirit of the place. The goal is to improve residents' quality of life through a vibrant cultural and social centre that meets local needs and aspirations.
Al-Sudairy also pointed out that using natural materials in construction enhanced thermal insulation. The reliance on natural cooling towers reduced electrical energy costs for cooling. This architectural approach not only preserved authenticity but also reinforced heritage.
The Architecture and Design Commission played a significant role in focusing on urban heritage. Their efforts ensured that Dar Al-Rahmaniah adhered to local traditions while incorporating innovative elements.
The award recognises projects built according to the charter’s standards, which aim to combine tradition with modernity. Dar Al-Rahmaniah stands as a testament to this vision by integrating local heritage into its design.
This recognition underscores the importance of maintaining cultural heritage in contemporary architecture. It highlights how traditional designs can be adapted to meet modern needs without losing their essence.
The Abdulrahman Al-Sudairy Cultural Center’s achievement with Dar Al-Rahmaniah exemplifies how architecture can reflect cultural values while fostering community interaction.
