Dairy Products Industry Highlights Women's Role In Preserving Local Heritage In Northern Borders Region

The Northern Borders Region has a long-standing tradition of dairy production, especially among livestock owners using basic tools. This practice highlights their strong ties to the environment and cultural heritage. Women in this region have played a crucial role in preserving these crafts, particularly in the dairy sector, which was once widespread.

Government initiatives, spearheaded by the Social Development Bank, have bolstered women's involvement in maintaining and evolving these crafts into viable income sources. These programs target families engaged in cottage industries and small businesses, helping them adapt traditional crafts to modern needs while ensuring their longevity for future generations.

Dairy Industry's Connection to Local Heritage

In the past, butter production was a prominent dairy industry. Women managed every step, from milking cattle to collecting milk in sheepskin containers. They allowed the milk to curdle at varying temperatures, shaking it until butter separated. The butter was then used to make margarine, while the remaining milk served as a drink or ingredient in other foods.

The churning process often included singing, adding an artistic and cultural dimension to the activity. The region also produced other dairy items like "iqatt" and "khathir." Names for "iqatt" differ by area, including "jameed," "mudayir," and "baqal," while "khathir" is sometimes called "roob" or "zabadi."

Many families continue these practices today to preserve their heritage and achieve self-sufficiency. Some have even turned these products into income sources by marketing them through cottage industry programs. These efforts align with national initiatives to safeguard handicraft heritage.

The Ministry of Culture's "Year of Handicrafts 2025" is a key milestone in promoting local heritage. Various regions, including Northern Borders Region, host exhibitions, markets, and workshops showcasing traditional crafts' economic, cultural, and educational value.

This initiative underscores the importance of preserving traditional crafts as part of Saudi Arabia's rich cultural tapestry. By supporting these efforts, the government aims to ensure that such valuable traditions are not only maintained but also adapted for contemporary relevance.
