Culture Summit Abu Dhabi 2023 Unites Global Voices On 'A Matter Of Time'

The Culture Summit Abu Dhabi commenced today in the UAE's capital, showcasing an impressive array of keynote speeches, creative discussions, panel debates, and cultural performances. This year's sixth edition, themed ‘A Matter of Time’, has attracted participants from over 90 countries. The event, spanning three days, delves into the significance of culture in shaping collective memories and explores non-linear perceptions of time.

Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), in his opening remarks, highlighted the theme 'A Matter of Time' as an opportunity for reflection and understanding. He emphasized the summit's role in fostering global community solutions through cultural understanding and respect. Al Mubarak also expressed pride in hosting a diverse group of thinkers, artists, and leaders, underscoring the inclusive nature of the summit.

Global Voices Unite at Abu Dhabi Summit

Adonis, a globally acclaimed poet and philosopher, delivered the first keynote speech, discussing the intricate relationship between humans and time against the backdrop of technological advancements. He stressed that while technology has its place, overreliance on it could hinder human creativity and freedom.

Emirati singer Hussain Al Jassmi and Egyptian Talk Show host Mona Al Shazly engaged in a conversation about the impact of time on an artist's journey and the UAE's role in supporting creative talents. Al Jassmi shared his personal experiences of support from the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and highlighted the UAE as a model of coexistence.

Nobel Prize Literature laureate Wole Soyinka and Professor Manthia Diawara discussed African culture, identity, and the continent's historical challenges. They touched upon the effects of slavery and the looting of artworks on African ideologies.

A session titled ‘First people's knowledge on living in the everywhen’ offered an alternative view on time, challenging Western linear conceptions. Artists from First People’s communities shared their perspectives on time as a continuum connected through collective memories.

The Culture Summit Abu Dhabi will run until 5th March and is organized by DCT Abu Dhabi with support from global partners such as UNESCO, Economist Impact, Design Museum, Google, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation, and the Recording Academy. Other partners include Anwar Gargash Diplomatic Academy, Arab World Institute, Berklee Abu Dhabi, Club de Madrid, Cultural Foundation, IFACCA, Image Nation Abu Dhabi, Louvre Abu Dhabi, NYUAD, and World Cities Culture Forum.
