CST And Saudi Space Agency Launch Global SpaceUp Competition
The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the Saudi Space Agency (SSA), in collaboration with Neo Space Group (NSG), have introduced the global SpaceUp Competition. This initiative aims to foster space entrepreneurship, support local companies in space-based solutions, and attract international entrepreneurs, startups, and SMEs. It also encourages the adoption of space-based solutions across various essential sectors.
The SpaceUp Competition is designed for both global and local entrepreneurs, startups, and SMEs. It features six challenge tracks that aim to develop space-based solutions for challenges in critical sectors by connecting supply with demand. The competition offers approximately $28 million in contractual opportunities across all tracks.

The competition's first track, "Monitoring Date Palms Pest and Disease," is sponsored by the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture along with the Weqaa Center. This track focuses on using space-based solutions to monitor palm farms and detect pests effectively. The second track, "Improving City Livability by Monitoring Urban Heat Islands," is led by the Quality of Life Program and addresses rising temperatures in crowded urban areas.
Another significant track is "Monitoring the Impact of Infrastructure Development," managed by Riyadh Infrastructure Projects Centre. This track aims to enhance infrastructure projects and traffic management. Additionally, two tracks sponsored by the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing focus on urban development: "Optimizing Urban Road Assets" targets detecting road damage for better maintenance, while "Mapping of Urban Trees" seeks to monitor green spaces in cities.
The sixth track, titled "Greening Saudi Arabia," is dedicated to monitoring tree growth and supporting sustainability efforts linked to the Saudi Green Initiative. This initiative underscores the importance of environmental conservation within urban settings. The competition not only provides direct access to end-users but also facilitates localization efforts.
"The SpaceUp Competition extends the efforts of CST and SSA in enhancing investment opportunities in the Saudi space sector and stimulating research and innovation," states the press release. These initiatives are part of broader efforts to bolster research and innovation within Saudi Arabia's burgeoning space industry.
Registration for this competition begins soon through their official webpage. Participants will have a chance to connect directly with end-users to implement their proposed solutions effectively.
