CST Launches Second Phase Of Recycle Your Device Initiative To Promote Sustainability

The Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) has introduced the second phase of the "Recycle Your Device" initiative. This effort, in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and other partners, aims to encourage both individuals and businesses to recycle electronic devices. The initiative is designed to promote environmental sustainability by reducing waste and emissions through a circular economy approach.

In its first phase launched in 2022, CST collaborated with MCIT, MWAN, and private sector entities. Over 100,000 devices were donated, valued at more than SAR30 million. This marked a significant step towards reducing electronic waste and conserving natural resources while boosting the Kingdom's digital economy sustainability.

The initiative also seeks to enhance social responsibility by making digital services available to families in need. A digital platform has been set up by CST to guide users on how to hand over their devices. It includes a list of eligible items such as landline phones, mobile phones, tablets, modems, printers, desktops, and laptops.

Two main paths are outlined for device recycling: safe disposal with the donation of recovered raw materials' value or repairing devices for donation to needy families. This dual approach ensures that devices are either responsibly recycled or refurbished for further use.

CST has assured participants that all data will be completely erased from devices before recycling or donation. This measure is crucial for protecting users' privacy and preventing any possibility of data recovery from these devices.

Partners involved in this initiative include Aramco, Roshn Group, Ertiqa, Jahez, Zain, SMSA, Saudi Green Initiative, Saudi Investment Recycling Company (SIRC), and CO Kitchens. Their collaboration underscores a collective commitment to fostering a sustainable environment through responsible electronic waste management.

This initiative not only supports environmental goals but also strengthens community solidarity by providing access to technology for those who need it most. By participating in this program, individuals and businesses contribute significantly to reducing e-waste while promoting social welfare.
