CST And GACA Urge Outdoor Enthusiasts To Use Personal Locator Beacons For Enhanced Safety
Outdoor enthusiasts venturing into remote areas are being urged by the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST) and the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) to utilise Personal Locator Beacons (PLBs). These devices use radio communication technology to send distress signals detectable by satellites, especially in regions lacking mobile network coverage.
The distress service is a collaborative effort involving several authorities, including GACA and Saudi Air Navigation Services. This partnership ensures comprehensive coverage throughout Saudi Arabia, even in its most isolated areas. The system can pinpoint a user's location via satellite, facilitating prompt assistance from search and rescue teams.

Once a distress signal is sent, it is received by the Saudi Arabian Mission Control Center, managed by Saudi Air Navigation Services. The signal is then quickly relayed to the Ministry of Interior's National Center for Security Operations. This centre coordinates with relevant authorities to execute search and rescue missions efficiently.
CST emphasised that PLB devices are crucial safety tools for those travelling or camping in areas without mobile network signals. They enable users to send alerts when in distress. These devices are easily accessible through authorised dealers approved by CST, with a list available on their website.
Outdoor enthusiasts can obtain PLB devices along with the necessary licenses from authorised dealers. CST has made it convenient for users by providing a list of these dealers on their official website, ensuring easy access to these essential safety tools.
The collaboration between CST, GACA, and other providers highlights the importance of safety measures for outdoor activities in remote locations. By leveraging satellite technology, they aim to enhance the safety of individuals exploring Saudi Arabia's vast landscapes.
