Craftonomics In Fashion: How Handicrafts Are Transforming The Global Fashion Economy

The Fashion Commission has introduced a white paper titled "Craftonomics in Fashion: How Handicrafts Are Reshaping the Global Fashion Economy." This initiative aims to boost global discussions on cultural heritage and fashion innovation. The release aligns with the Ministry of Culture's decision to designate 2025 as the Year of Handicrafts, underscoring Saudi Arabia's dedication to preserving traditions while fostering economic growth.

Handicrafts are increasingly pivotal in the global fashion industry, as highlighted in the white paper. It explores how crafts interact with fashion, offering insights backed by data analysis. The document emphasizes handicrafts as both cultural treasures and economic drivers, promoting creative expression and diversification.

Handicrafts Reshape Global Fashion Economy

The Saudi handicrafts sector is valued at $405 million, with local crafts making up 20% of this market. Efforts to revive this sector are gaining momentum with the upcoming Year of Handicrafts in 2025. This initiative merges cultural preservation with industry development, aiming to enhance economic opportunities.

More than 5,000 artisans are registered on the Heritage Commission’s Abde'a platform. They have produced over 4,400 products for hotels, airlines, and retail channels. Women artisans significantly outnumber men, highlighting the sector’s role in inclusive growth and community empowerment.

The white paper "Craftonomics in Fashion" asserts that handicrafts are now central to sustainable fashion practices. These include localized production models and meeting consumer demand for authenticity. Traditional skills, when paired with innovation and global partnerships, can drive cross-cultural collaboration and create new economic opportunities.

This launch showcases the broader mission of the Fashion Commission. It aims to enable Saudi creativity, enhance cultural exchange, support artisans, and contribute to sustainable growth within the fashion industry.
