COP16 Presidency Highlights Importance Of Private Sector In Land Restoration Efforts At COP30 In Brazil
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken on the presidency of the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16). This highlights the increasing role of private sector involvement in global land restoration efforts. The Kingdom participated in a high-level event alongside the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil.
During this event, titled "Land Restoration for Climate – The Evolution of Private Sector Efforts and Solutions," significant achievements under the Riyadh Action Plan were highlighted. This initiative aims to engage both governmental and non-governmental actors in land restoration projects. The plan is crucial for integrating land, ocean, and atmosphere efforts through practical measures that link local plans with financing and political backing.

Dr. Osama Faqeeha, Deputy Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture for Environmental Affairs and Advisor to the COP16 President, stressed the importance of private sector initiatives. He noted that forming just one centimeter of topsoil can take around 1,000 years, while its degradation can occur in as little as two years. This underscores the urgency for action.
Faqeeha mentioned that over 300 companies have already begun taking serious steps to protect land under one of the five initiatives from the Riyadh Action Plan. The goal is to motivate thousands more companies across various sectors to contribute towards restoring 1.5 billion hectares of land globally.
The Riyadh Action Plan's work was presented to partners including Ambition Loop, World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), Boston Consulting Group (BCG), and senior UN High-Level Climate Champions. These partners showcased transformative innovations from the private sector, such as insurance-based risk-protection solutions and emerging soil-health technologies.
The WBCSD includes over 250 global companies like PepsiCo and OFI, demonstrating a broad commitment to sustainable development practices. These collaborations aim to drive significant progress in land restoration through innovative solutions.
The event underscored how essential it is for private enterprises to join forces with public entities in combating desertification. By working together, they can create effective strategies that address environmental challenges while promoting sustainable growth.
This collaborative approach not only benefits ecosystems but also supports economic resilience by ensuring long-term sustainability. As these efforts continue, they pave the way for more comprehensive strategies that integrate environmental preservation with economic development goals.
