COP16 Presidency Highlights Importance Of Innovation And Partnerships In Addressing Drought And Food Security
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, leading the 16th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), emphasised the need for integrated and proactive strategies to address drought and food security challenges. This approach involves early prediction, preparedness, and empowering partnerships across multiple stakeholders to strengthen resilience against climate change.
During a dialogue session titled "The Global Food Security Initiative" in Seville, Spain, part of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4), experts discussed these issues. The session included international experts and environmental specialists who shared insights on tackling these global challenges.

Dr. Osama Faqeeha, Deputy Minister of Environment and advisor to the COP16 presidency, highlighted that addressing drought requires a significant shift in financing models and international mechanisms. He advocated for adopting proactive tools, flexible institutional structures, and cross-sectoral partnerships to ensure long-term adaptation and mitigate climatic impacts.
Dr. Faqeeha further noted that these dialogue sessions reflect COP16's dedication to ongoing discussions on critical environmental issues. They aim to support innovation, encourage investments in land preservation, and foster cooperation at regional and international levels in areas affected by drought.
The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture's involvement aligns with Saudi Arabia's continuous efforts to enhance global climate and environmental action. This commitment is further strengthened by empowering the "Riyadh Global Drought Resilience Partnership," launched by Saudi Arabia in December 2024.
This initiative seeks to transition from reactive responses to drought towards proactive planning and prevention strategies. It aims to build on the momentum gained since the conference's launch in Riyadh last December by solidifying effective partnerships.
Long-Term Adaptation Strategies
Dr. Faqeeha emphasised the importance of stimulating international cooperation to reduce land degradation and empower vulnerable communities. He stressed building on existing momentum through effective partnerships as crucial for achieving these goals.
The remarks during this session underscore Saudi Arabia's role in leading discussions on environmental issues while supporting innovation and investment in land preservation efforts globally.
By focusing on proactive measures and fostering collaboration among nations, Saudi Arabia aims to enhance resilience against climate change impacts while ensuring food security for future generations.
