The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of Abdulrahman Alfadley, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, has reaffirmed its dedication to environmental preservation. During the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD COP16), Alfadley highlighted Saudi Arabia's commitment to combating desertification and land degradation. This commitment was emphasized in his speech at the conference's conclusion in Riyadh.

Alfadley expressed gratitude towards King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and HRH the Crown Prince for their unwavering support. Their backing enabled Saudi Arabia to host this significant international event, reflecting their dedication to environmental issues and sustainable development. The conference saw over 85,000 participants from various sectors, including international organizations and indigenous peoples.

COP16 Conference Addresses Land Degradation and Drought

Saudi Arabia introduced three major initiatives during COP16. These include a sand and dust storm monitoring initiative, the Riyadh global drought resilience partnership targeting 80 vulnerable countries, and the business for earth initiative aimed at engaging the global private sector in sustainable land management practices. These initiatives are part of broader efforts to preserve ecosystems and reduce land degradation.

The conference concluded with more than 35 decisions addressing critical issues such as reducing land degradation, managing drought, migration challenges, and tackling dust storms. It also focused on enhancing scientific research and innovation while empowering women, youths, civil society, and indigenous communities in addressing environmental challenges.

Regional donors pledged $12 billion for projects aimed at mitigating land degradation and drought impacts. Alfadley urged private sector entities and international financial institutions to follow suit in addressing global environmental challenges affecting water and food security across continents.

The Kingdom's successful hosting of COP16 marked a historic moment by organizing over 900 activities in Blue and Green zones. This effort significantly mobilized international momentum towards achieving goals related to reducing land degradation and mitigating drought effects.

Global Cooperation Emphasized

Alfadley stressed the importance of international cooperation in tackling environmental challenges through innovative solutions. He highlighted investing in green areas expansion, sharing modern technologies, and fostering partnerships among governments, private sectors, local communities, financing institutions, and NGOs.

The conference approved new topics for inclusion in future activities such as sustainable agricultural food systems. This aligns with Saudi Arabia's vision for a comprehensive approach to environmental sustainability.

Alfadley acknowledged the efforts of all parties involved in making COP16 a success. He thanked national entities, private sector participants, civil society organizations, as well as representatives from environment-related sectors for their contributions throughout the event.

This session marked a significant milestone as it was held for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa region. It underscored Saudi Arabia's pioneering role in regional and international environmental protection efforts.

The outcomes from this session are expected to drive significant progress in preserving lands globally while building capacities to confront drought effectively. The Kingdom remains committed to joint international action for sustainable solutions against desertification challenges.
