Cooperation Between China And The MENA Region Explored At TRENDS Symposium On Global Security Initiative

TRENDS Research & Advisory, in partnership with the China Centre for Europe and Africa of the China International Communications Group (CICG) and Foreign Languages Press, organised a symposium. The event focused on "Cooperation between China and the Middle East and North Africa Region under the Global Security Initiative." It attracted diplomats, thinkers, and researchers from both regions.

Dr. Mohamed Abdullah Al-Ali, CEO of TRENDS, began the symposium by discussing China's Global Security Initiative (GSI), introduced in April 2022. He highlighted its key principles: ensuring security, promoting global peace, respecting state sovereignty, adhering to the UN Charter, and resolving disputes peacefully. These principles align with the region's strategic views on a pluralistic international order.

China-MENA Cooperation Discussed at Symposium

Zhang Yiming, China's Ambassador to the UAE, emphasised the importance of implementing GSI in the Middle East amid global changes and security challenges. He noted that cooperation between China and the region has reached significant milestones under GSI. This initiative was proposed by President Xi Jinping at the Boao Forum for Asia in 2022 to adapt to international changes with solidarity and a win-win approach.

Liu Dawei's speech, delivered by Li Wenxue from CICG, explored Sino-Arab convergence on security and development issues. It referenced historical ties through the ancient Silk Road and modern Belt and Road Initiative. The UAE is highlighted as a key partner for China in this path due to its status as China's largest trading partner in the Arab world.

Dr. Al-Ali also mentioned that strong economic connections and many countries joining the Belt and Road Initiative enhance cooperation under GSI. The MENA region needs this initiative's spirit to tackle crises, combat terrorism, and address climate change and cyber challenges effectively.

The symposium featured speeches from notable speakers who shared insights into various aspects of China-MENA cooperation under GSI. These discussions provided valuable perspectives on enhancing collaboration between these regions.

The event underscored that China and Middle Eastern countries are experiencing their best historical period of relations under GSI. This cooperation spans multiple fields, marking significant achievements along this journey.
