Innovative White Coating Around Saudi Arabia Mosque Cuts Temperatures By 20°C

In an innovative step towards enhancing the comfort of pilgrims in Saudi Arabia, the Roads General Authority recently completed a significant project around Namira Mosque, utilising a white coating technology on asphalt to reduce temperatures and provide a cooler environment. This initiative, employing locally produced materials known for their lower sunlight absorption, has been successful in decreasing surface temperatures by approximately 20°C, according to a statement released to the Saudi Press Agency.

Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, the spokesperson for the Roads General Authority, highlighted the collaborative nature of this project, which saw the authority partnering with various entities dedicated to serving the needs of pilgrims. The technology, which reflects sunlight away from the surface, was applied around the vicinity of Namira Mosque, covering an expansive area of around 25,000 square meters.

Namira Mosque Area Cooled by 20 C

The use of this sunlight-reflective asphalt coating is not a new venture for the Roads General Authority. In the previous year, an experimental application of the technology on pedestrian paths leading to the Stoning of the Devil area, a location known for its elevated temperatures, resulted in a reduction of 12 to 15°C. The success of the initial experiment prompted the expansion of the cooling project to include the area surrounding Namira Mosque this year.

Al-Otaibi explained the mechanism behind the temperature-lowering technology, stating that it primarily works by reflecting sunlight, thereby reducing the surface temperature and consequently creating a more comfortable environment for pedestrians. This development marks a significant step forward in improving the conditions for pilgrims performing their religious duties, especially in areas prone to high temperatures.

Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday pilgrims can expect average high temperatures of 44°C during the Hajj, which last year saw thousands of cases of heat stress.

“The expected climate for Hajj this year will witness an increase in average temperatures of one and a half to two degrees above normal in Makkah and Madinah,” NMC chief Ayman Ghulam told a press conference.
