Riyadh Embarks On Construction Of King Abdulaziz Park, Enhancing Urban Greenspace
Construction has begun on King Abdulaziz Park, a key part of the Green Riyadh initiative, as announced by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City. The park, approved by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and proposed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, will span 4.3 million square meters and is expected to be completed in three years.
Located north of Riyadh, the park will be bordered by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Road, Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Abdulaziz Road, Prince Badr bin Abdul Mohsen Road, and Anas bin Malik Road. Its proximity to King Khalid International Airport and Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University ensures easy access for both residents and visitors through excellent public transport links.

The park will feature six unique botanical zones, including a 200,000-square-meter garden with over 200 native plant species. Other areas will mimic highland, plain, plateau, and desert landscapes to promote biodiversity and provide a sanctuary for wildlife. More than two million trees and shrubs suited to Riyadh’s climate will be planted to achieve 65% shade coverage.
King Abdulaziz Park aims to be a vibrant community hub with 24 children’s play areas, 30 sports facilities, and over 115 kilometers of paths for walking, jogging, and cycling. Green terraces, squares, and open-air theaters will host various events and festivals. Additionally, restaurants and shops will cater to visitors' needs.
The park's irrigation system will use recycled water to minimize environmental impact. This aligns with the Saudi Green Initiative's goals of sustainability and environmental conservation. The project also supports Saudi Vision 2030’s aim of planting 10 billion trees across the nation.
Design Competition
A global design competition was held to select a concept that blends harmoniously with the local environment. The winning design integrates natural elements seamlessly into the urban landscape while fostering ecological balance.
By increasing Riyadh’s green spaces to 9% and raising per capita green space to 28 square meters, King Abdulaziz Park will help mitigate climate change effects. It aims to improve air quality and enhance Riyadh’s global reputation as an attractive place to live.
The park's development is a significant step towards achieving Saudi Vision 2030’s environmental goals. It reflects the Kingdom's commitment to creating sustainable urban environments that benefit both residents and the ecosystem.
