Dubai's RTA Completes Old Dubai Souq And Al Sabkha Marine Transport Stations

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has announced the completion of Old Dubai Souq and Al Sabkha marine transport stations. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance the infrastructure and facilities of marine transport within Dubai Creek, aligning with the city's expansive developmental goals across various sectors.

The unveiling of these stations signifies a crucial step in progressing the Marine Transport Strategic Plan 2020–2030 set forth by the RTA. This plan aims to bolster the marine transport system as a vital component of Dubai's mobility network. In the first half of 2025, marine transport modes witnessed a significant uptake, with passenger numbers hitting 9.7 million, showcasing the growing reliance on this form of transport by the city's residents and visitors.

In an effort to elevate the passenger experience, the RTA has introduced several upgrades at both stations. A notable enhancement includes a 50% increase in shaded waiting areas and the incorporation of new spaces for investment opportunities. The stations now also meet the Dubai Code for People of Determination, ensuring accessibility for all. Moreover, improvements have been made to the lighting systems, and construction materials chosen are both sustainable and environmentally friendly.

The recent enhancements draw inspiration from the successful refurbishments made to the Bur Dubai and Old Deira Souq stations in an earlier phase of the project. These upgrades have not only preserved the unique cultural identity of the area but also added amenities for users, expanded the shaded waiting spaces, and introduced retail outlets to cater to the needs of abra riders.

In a move to support the operators within the marine transport network, the RTA has implemented air-conditioned rest areas for the operators of traditional wooden abras. This initiative aims to provide comfort for the workforce, thereby enhancing their working conditions and operational efficiency.

The simultaneous development of the Old Dubai Souq and Al Sabkha stations was strategically planned to expedite the project's completion. This approach allowed for the optimization of resources, improved financial returns, and strengthened economic efficiency.

Furthermore, the RTA executed an operational plan to ensure that trip schedules were maintained, safety and security for riders were upheld, and smooth navigation and operations were guaranteed at both stations.

The completion of these stations underlines Dubai's commitment to advancing its marine transport sector and enhancing the overall transportation infrastructure.
