Comoros Inaugurates 6.3MW Solar Plant To Enhance Renewable Energy Access With ADFD Funding
The Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has celebrated the opening of a 6.3-megawatt solar power facility in the Comoros, financed with AED25.7 million (US$7 million). This project aims to boost the country's energy infrastructure, addressing rising energy needs and promoting economic growth. It also underscores ADFD's dedication to environmental responsibility and sustainable progress.
The solar plant will deliver a dependable renewable energy source to Moroni, the capital, and nearby areas. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels, decreases carbon emissions, and enhances residents' quality of life. The initiative aligns with the UAE's global development strategy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), showcasing a shared commitment to expanding clean energy access.

Azali Assoumani, President of the Union of the Comoros, led the inauguration ceremony. Jumaa Rashed Al Remeithi, UAE Ambassador to the Union of the Comoros, along with government officials from both countries, attended. Assoumani praised the partnership: "The UAE has a remarkable record in driving renewable energy advancements and climate action."
Assoumani further highlighted that this collaboration with ADFD is crucial for achieving development goals and protecting the planet. He stated that this solar plant represents more than just an energy project; it is a milestone in transitioning to clean energy, strengthening economic stability, and creating new job opportunities.
Al Remeithi remarked on the project's significance: "This significant project reflects the close ties between the UAE and the Union of the Comoros." He emphasized that it demonstrates UAE’s commitment to promoting sustainable development and enhancing strategic partnerships across vital sectors like renewable energy.
ADFD's Role in Sustainability
Mohamed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director-General of ADFD, noted that this solar plant marks a milestone in advancing economic and social development in Comoros. "By investing in renewable energy," he said, "we contribute to long-term sustainability and environmental responsibility." He stressed ADFD’s focus on clean energy as a driver of stability.
Al Suwaidi added that supporting the energy sector is a priority for ADFD due to its role in reducing fossil fuel dependence and lowering carbon emissions. "Our investment in clean energy projects reflects our commitment to drive economic stability and a sustainable future," he remarked.
Integration with National Grid
The solar plant will connect with Comoros’ national grid through medium-voltage lines, ensuring stable electricity access for the region. This project highlights ADFD's longstanding partnership with Comoros since 1979, which has included AED439.4 million (US$119.6 million) in concessional loans and grants for critical sectors like energy, health, education, and transport.
By enhancing clean energy infrastructure, this initiative directly supports SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It fulfills ADFD’s mandate to drive sustainable development globally while reinforcing its commitment to environmental stewardship.
