US President Trump's Visit Highlights Saudi Arabia's Growing Role As A Global Digital Economy Hub

The visit of US President Donald Trump to Saudi Arabia, accompanied by top leaders from major international tech firms, highlights the strong strategic partnership between the two nations. This relationship has been built over more than 90 years, covering various sectors. Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Alswaha noted that this visit underscores Saudi Arabia's growing importance in the global digital economy.

Saudi Arabia is recognised as the largest digital economy in its region and a central hub for investments in artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Between 2024 and 2025, the Kingdom attracted over $13 billion in US investments, accounting for more than 90% of all international investments in AI, data centres, and cloud services. These investments were made with major tech companies such as AWS, Microsoft, Google Cloud, Oracle, and Groq.

Saudi Arabia Strengthens Position in Digital Economy

Alswaha emphasised that Saudi Arabia is not only investing in technology but also focusing on human capital development. Collaborations with American companies like Apple, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft are crucial for building the largest digital talent pool in the region. Currently, this pool exceeds 381,000 professionals. The Kingdom is also leading globally in empowering women in artificial intelligence.

On the space exploration front, Alswaha highlighted ongoing collaborations with US institutions. A historic mission saw the first Saudi woman astronaut travel to the International Space Station. This mission was conducted with Axiom Space, NASA, and SpaceX and involved advanced research in health and sustainability.

The Kingdom's commitment to the future $2 trillion global space economy is evident through its signing of the Artemis Accords. Alswaha pointed out that innovative partnerships with leading US universities and institutions have led to establishing 14 centres of excellence. These include collaborations with MIT, Stanford, Caltech, and IBM in fields like AI, nanotechnology, and clean energy.

The minister attributed these achievements to the unwavering support from Saudi leadership under His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. The Crown Prince's vision for digital transformation aligns with Saudi Vision 2030. This vision aims to bolster knowledge production and accelerate innovation within the Kingdom.

These initiatives are enhancing Saudi Arabia's position on the global stage as a leader in technology and innovation. The strategic partnerships fostered between Saudi Arabia and major international tech firms continue to drive significant advancements across various sectors.
