Riyadh Hosts Successful Codex Alimentarius Training Program For Near East
The training program for the Coordinating Committee for Near East (CCNE) countries of the Codex Alimentarius concluded in Riyadh. Organised by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), it aimed to empower the region for Codex compliance. Representatives from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Health Organization (WHO), member states, and the Codex Secretariat participated.
The three-day event featured specialised sessions on food safety and enhancing capacities of Codex contact point representatives. These sessions highlighted data integration, regional cooperation opportunities, and the role of FAO and WHO expert committees in providing scientific advice to Codex technical committees.

Panel discussions delved into innovations in food production systems, risk assessment, data analysis methods, and transforming food systems for better health. The Food Control System Assessment Tool was also reviewed during these discussions.
Saudi Arabia’s experience in these areas was shared during the sessions. The Kingdom, represented by SFDA, has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Codex Alimentarius since 2020. The SFDA has chaired the CCNE Region since then.
The upcoming Codex strategy for 2026-2031 was reviewed alongside experiences from other Codex coordinating committees in various regions. This review aimed to align future strategies with current regional needs and global standards.
