Cholera Should Not Be Killing Anyone In The 21st Century, Warns WHO Amid Rising Cases

Cholera, a disease that should be eradicated by now, continues to affect many regions. Philippe Barboza from the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported 100,000 cases and 1,300 deaths this year. These figures are likely underestimated due to incomplete reporting. The disease is spreading to new areas like Namibia and Kenya, raising concerns about its reach.

In Angola, the situation is particularly dire. Dr. Barboza noted that the fatality rate there exceeds 4%, with Angola accounting for 36% of global cases in 2025. The rapid spread within Angola and to neighbouring countries is alarming. WHO has responded by sending rapid deployment teams and setting up facilities while training local staff.

WHO: Cholera Should Not Kill in 21st Century

Conflict and climate change have worsened the cholera situation globally. In Myanmar alone, since July 2024, there have been 12,000 acute cases reported. Haiti faces its own outbreak but lacks the necessary funds to manage it effectively, according to Dr. Barboza.

Dr. Barboza emphasised that cholera fatalities should not occur in this century. He stated, "Cholera should not be killing anyone in the 21st century." The case fatality ratio in some countries exceeds one percent, highlighting the urgent need for action.

At March's end, WHO had 5.6 million treatment doses ready for emergencies. However, demand remains high, necessitating increased vaccine production. Collaborative efforts and more investment are crucial to prevent future outbreaks.

The preliminary data for 2024 showed a significant rise in cases compared to 2023, with 810,000 cases and 5,900 deaths reported. This increase underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to combat cholera effectively.

Efforts continue globally to address this health crisis through joint actions by WHO and its partners. By expanding vaccine production and deploying resources efficiently, further outbreaks can be mitigated.
