China Poised To Lead Global Humanoid Robot Production With Over 10,000 Units In 2023

China is set to lead the world in humanoid robot production this year, producing over half of the global output. This surge is part of the country's focus on advancing artificial intelligence and automation, according to a report by Leaderobot and nine other organisations. The report predicts China will manufacture more than 10,000 humanoid robots in 2023, generating sales of about 8.24 billion yuan (US$1.14 billion).

The humanoid robot industry is transitioning from pilot projects to widespread commercialisation as costs decrease and ecosystems develop. This shift mirrors China's swift growth in electric vehicles and could provide a new economic boost for the nation, the report suggests.

In March, UBTech Robotics, a Chinese robotics company, announced that Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor would deploy 20 industrial humanoid robots. Full deployment is anticipated by mid-2025. This marks an early sign of commercial success in the sector.

Wang Tianmiao, Honorary Director of Robotics at Beihang University, noted that the increase in investment is driven by both market dynamics and national policies. The growing interest in robotics aligns with China's strategic goals.

The report also emphasises the expanding field of embodied intelligence, where robots integrate AI with physical interactions. China's market for this technology is expected to reach 5.3 billion yuan this year and escalate to 103.8 billion yuan by 2030, capturing nearly 45 percent of the global market share.

Since early 2024, technological advancements have accelerated alongside rising demand and policy support. International collaborations have also intensified, contributing to the sector's momentum.

The rapid development in humanoid robotics signifies a significant step forward for China in AI and automation. As these technologies mature, they promise to reshape industries and drive economic growth.
