China Marks Historic Presence At 33rd Abu Dhabi International Book Fair
At the heart of cultural exchange and literary celebration, the 33rd Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF 2024), running until 5th May at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), is hosting the People’s Republic of China in what is described as its most significant participation in any global book fair. The event, organized by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), showcases a 465-square-metre pavilion dedicated to China, featuring 70 distinguished guests including publishers, writers, translators, and officials from 80 Chinese publishing houses.
Under the leadership of Du Zhanyuan, President of China International Communications Group (CICG), the delegation aims to highlight China's rich historical narrative while also focusing on contemporary projects that contribute to a vibrant cultural ecosystem. This initiative is part of broader efforts to foster stronger connections with the Arab world. Among the leading participants are the China International Communications Group, Foreign Language Press, and China Educational Publications Import and Export Corporation, alongside other notable academic and official institutions.
The Cultural Programme at ADIBF will spotlight Sun Rui, a celebrated Chinese author known for his work 'Waiting in the Rye'. Additionally, the heads of 10 Chinese publishing houses will participate, introducing twenty books to Arab readers for the first time in Arabic, including a work by Chinese President Xi Jinping titled ‘The Belt and Road Initiative’.
This year's fair not only serves as a platform for literary exchange but also aims to deepen Emirati-Chinese relations through various events. One such event is the Chinese Language Talent Competition in UAE Schools, a collaborative effort with the Chinese Embassy. Furthermore, the ALC and CICG are set to launch the Arab-Chinese Platform for Publishing and Culture. This new initiative will involve 10 Arab and 10 Chinese publishing houses, promoting translation efforts from Chinese to Arabic.
Highlighting China’s advancements in technology, a seminar on artificial intelligence (AI) will demonstrate the latest publishing technologies from China. This session aims to introduce these innovations to an international audience for the first time. In total, there will be 15 Chinese-themed events at ADIBF, covering a wide range of professional, artistic, and cultural topics.
The ADIBF 2024 stands as a testament to the growing cultural and diplomatic ties between the UAE and China. Through its extensive program and diverse participation, it underscores the importance of international book fairs as venues for cultural dialogue and technological exchange.
