Swiss Author's Debut Children's Book Champions Uniqueness And Environmental Care
A Swiss author's journey of self-acceptance and his encounters with camels across Africa and the UAE have culminated in a captivating children's book, "The Spotty Ghaidaan". Launched at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair (ADIBF) on Monday, the book is a collaboration between author Kurt Blum and Emirati illustrator Mohammed Al Rais. It narrates the tale of a camel overcoming his negative self-image, teaching children about uniqueness, triumph, and environmental awareness.
Kurt Blum shared with the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the character of Ghaidaan draws from his personal experiences and observations. As a child, Blum felt self-conscious about the spots on his skin but found confidence through his musical talent. His extensive travels in Africa, interactions with camels, and visits to camel beauty contests and races in the UAE further inspired the narrative.

The story's protagonist, Ghaidaan, is portrayed as overcoming challenges and embracing his distinctiveness, mirroring Blum's own journey. The book aims to convey to young readers that their differences are their strengths. Blum's decision to publish came after attending a webinar in 2020, despite having written the book back in 2008 but hesitating due to financial concerns and lack of publishing experience.
Mohammed Al Rais's illustrations play a vital role in bringing the story to life, depicting the rich Emirati culture and heritage. From local architecture to traditional methods of food storage and travel, Al Rais aims to educate and fascinate the young audience about the UAE's traditions.
"The Spotty Ghaidaan" also carries an environmental message, highlighting recycling and reusability through Ghaidaan's innovative use of aluminium cans. The book has garnered support from prestigious entities such as the UAE Ministry of Culture through the National Grant for Culture and Creativity Programme and the Embassy of Switzerland in the UAE.
With its engaging narrative, educational themes, and vivid illustrations, "The Spotty Ghaidaan" is poised to inspire children to appreciate their uniqueness and contribute positively to their world.
