Central Bank Of Oman Announces Loan Repayment Relief Following Severe Weather

In response to the recent severe weather events that have impacted the Sultanate of Oman, the Central Bank of Oman (CBO) has taken a proactive step to ease the financial strain on its citizens and small enterprises, according to Times Of Oman report. Recognizing the difficulties faced by those affected, the CBO has issued a directive to banks, finance, and leasing companies within the country, advising them to defer loan and finance installments. This measure is intended to provide immediate relief to individuals earning less than OMR 3,000 ($7,800) and to small and micro enterprises grappling with the aftermath of the rainfall.

Details of the Directive

The Central Bank's announcement outlines specific controls to guide the deferment process. Primarily, banking and financial institutions are instructed to defer up to three installments of loans and finance upon the borrower's request. This can be extended to a maximum of four installments, which includes considerations for Eid waivers. A significant aspect of this directive is the emphasis on not imposing additional financial burdens on those affected. Accordingly, no interest or profit should be accrued during the deferment period, and no charges are to be applied for processing deferment requests.

Furthermore, the CBO mandates that all affected persons must be fully informed about the impact of deferment on their repayment schedule before any deferment is granted. This is to ensure transparency and to help individuals and businesses make informed decisions regarding their financial commitments during this challenging period.

Impact and Implementation

This initiative by the Central Bank of Oman represents a critical step in supporting the resilience of the Omani economy by directly assisting those most vulnerable to unexpected financial pressures. By providing a temporary reprieve from loan and finance repayments, the CBO aids in mitigating the economic repercussions of the recent weather conditions on individuals and small enterprises.
