Al-Baha Carpentry: A Fusion Of Heritage And Modern Craftsmanship

"A trade in hand ensures against poverty" is a saying deeply rooted in the Al-Baha region. This phrase, often used by the forefathers, highlights the importance of carpentry, a craft that has thrived due to the area's diverse tree species like juniper, sweet acacia, sidr, patch, and neem. These trees provide essential materials for the trade.

The Al-Baha region boasts a rich heritage of handicrafts and industries. These crafts are integral to its cultural identity and have been passed down through generations. Local residents are now striving to modernise these traditional crafts to meet contemporary challenges.

Mohammed Al-Zahrani, an octogenarian carpenter, shared insights with SPA about his profession. "Carpentry is a difficult and tiring profession, as it requires a lot of time and effort," he said. The process begins with sourcing wood from sidr and sweet acacia trees found in Al-Baha's mountains and valleys.

Al-Zahrani explained that after obtaining the wood, it must be peeled and dried before any cutting or engraving can begin. He noted that he decorates the wood with geometric shapes, which can be either simple or unique based on customer demands. Carpentry has been his primary source of income throughout his life.

Despite its challenges, Al-Zahrani has continued practicing carpentry not just for livelihood but also to introduce his children and grandchildren to this traditional craft. He emphasised the importance of passing down these skills to future generations.

Showcasing Traditional Techniques

Al-Zahrani participated in an exhibition at the Social Activity Center in Wadi Al-Arja village within Bani Hassan Governorate. Here, he displayed wood engravings to demonstrate how ancestors worked in the past. This exhibition aimed to preserve and showcase traditional techniques for younger generations.

The locals' efforts to develop and modernise these crafts reflect their dedication to preserving their cultural heritage while adapting to modern times. This balance between tradition and innovation is crucial for maintaining the region's unique identity.

The enduring legacy of carpentry in Al-Baha serves as a testament to the region's rich cultural history. By continuing these practices, locals ensure that their heritage remains vibrant and relevant in today's world.
