Cairo Initiates Trial Operation For Metro Line 3's Latest Phase
This week marked a significant stride in Cairo's urban mobility landscape as Minister of Transport Kamel Al-Wazir presided over the initiation of passenger trials for a crucial section of Cairo Metro Line 3's third phase. This particular stretch, extending 7.1 kilometres from Al-Tawfiqia station to Cairo University, integrates five stations and represents a vital component of the city's expanding metro network.
The newly opened section boasts three underground stations: Al-Tawfiqia, Wadi Al-Nile, and Gamaet El-Dewal; a surface station at Boulaq Al-Dakrour; and an elevated platform at Cairo University LRT. This development not only promises to enhance connectivity across the Greater Cairo region but also signifies the completion of the third metro line, heralding a new era of public transport in Egypt's bustling capital.
With the commencement of trials, the third line is now fully navigable from the Adly Mansour Central Interchange Station through to Cairo University, encompassing a total of 41.2 kilometres and 34 stations spread over four developmental phases. Minister Al-Wazir underscored the line's strategic importance, linking the eastern and western parts of Greater Cairo and knitting together a comprehensive urban transit network that includes subways, monorail systems, and light electric trains.
This extensive network facilitates seamless passenger transfers across various modes of transport. Notably, it connects with the first metro line at Nasser Station, the second line at Ataba and Cairo University stations, and with the light electric train at Adly Mansour Central Station. Further integrations include connections with the East Nile Monorail at Stadium Station, the West Nile Monorail at Nile Valley Station, and the anticipated sixth line at Abbasiya Station.
The operational readiness of the line is supported by three state-of-the-art maintenance workshops located in Al-Abbasiya, Imbaba, and Al-Salam. These facilities, critical for the upkeep and servicing of the metro's rolling stock, underscore the commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and efficiency within Cairo's metro system.
In parallel to the metro's expansion, Minister Al-Wazir also inaugurated the first phase of electric vehicles within the New Administrative Capital. This initiative saw 10 electric taxis commence operations, paving the way for a greener, more sustainable urban transport solution. The project will eventually expand to include a fleet of 145 electric vehicles, featuring models like the Chevrolet Bolt and MG4, further demonstrating Egypt's dedication to embracing innovative transport technologies.
The dual launch of Cairo Metro Line 3's passenger trials and the electric vehicle initiative represents a significant leap forward in Egypt's urban transport infrastructure, promising enhanced connectivity, sustainability, and convenience for residents and visitors alike.
