Buraidah Dates Carnival Drives Economic Surge In Al-Qassim Region

The Al-Qassim Region is bustling with economic activity due to the Buraidah Dates Carnival, which runs for 51 days with sessions in both the morning and evening. This event is part of an initiative led by Governor Prince Dr. Faisal bin Mishaal bin Saud bin Abdulaziz, focusing on the agricultural sector, especially palm trees.

Buraidah has emerged as the largest city in date production, contributing about 50% of Saudi Arabia's total output of 1.6 million tons. The carnival has evolved through four distinct phases under Prince Dr. Faisal's leadership. The first phase began in 2006 with limited resources. In 2016, the second phase expanded the market area to accommodate more farmers and traders after moving to a dedicated city for dates.

Economic Boost from Dates Carnival

In 2018, during the third phase, efforts were made to enhance the carnival's media presence under Prince Dr. Faisal's directives. This attracted numerous personalities and officials from within and outside Saudi Arabia. The fourth phase started in early August 2022 when Prince Dr. Faisal introduced the name "Buraidah Dates Carnival," significantly increasing programs, activities, and visits from regional and international representatives.

The carnival places a strong emphasis on dates, receiving substantial attention for their cultivation. Efforts have been directed towards expanding high-quality and productive varieties like Barhee, Kulas, Sokkary, and Majdool. Initiatives also include improving modern irrigation systems and providing technical support to farmers.

Other measures involve establishing facilities for date storage, cooling, and processing. Developing transportation and distribution networks is also a priority, along with fostering date-related industries such as packaging factories and derivative product production.

Impact on Local Economy

The Buraidah Dates Carnival has transformed into a major event featuring workshops and international conferences aimed at developing this national product in line with Saudi Vision 2030. The scope of activities has expanded significantly, attracting ambassadors and ministers among other regional and international representatives.

This transformation has had a notable impact on the local economy by promoting agricultural development and boosting trade within the region. The carnival not only highlights date production but also supports related industries through various initiatives aimed at enhancing quality and productivity.

Prince Dr. Faisal's initiatives have provided a roadmap for developing the date industry in Al-Qassim Region. These efforts have significantly impacted the carnival's evolution through its various phases, making it a key event in promoting Saudi Arabia's agricultural sector.
